Smokin’ babies! - by Dr Raman Subramaniam

Smokin’ babies!
What smoking can do to your unborn child…
IT seems to be an obvious fact that pregnant women should not smoke. In fact, it is an undeniable truth.
However, it is important to take a step further into understanding the detrimental dangers of smoking, and how it affects pregnancy. Smoking affects pregnancy in various damaging ways, e.g. miscarriage and spontaneous abortion, and has a long-term effect on the foetus, such as increased risk of developing respiratory illnesses.
Nicotine, the hazardous ingredient in a cigarette, is the major culprit affecting smokers at large and particularly pregnant women. Nicotine intake during pregnancy affects the supply of oxygen and nutrents to the foetus. Nicotine may result in sudden infant death syndrome, abnormal lung development, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and an ectopic pregnancy.
Smoking limits the nutrition that a baby receives while in the womb. Being malnourished is detrimental to a baby’s brain, affecting the mental development. Nicotine also has a damaging effect on developing nerve cells, which might result in brain malformations, poor functioning, and learning problems. There is also a tendency of developing behavioural problems.
The delivery of blood to the placenta and the transmission of oxygen and nutrients to the foetus are greatly affected by spasms of the arteries. The lack of oxygen and nutrients for the foetus can also result in smaller size or underweight babies. Babies who are born prematurely, smaller in size or underweight could struggle with learning problems throughout their entire lives.
Smoking is also known to cause vascular diseases. Therefore, another risk for pregnant women who smoke is blocked blood vessels, leading to placental abruption, the separation of the placenta from the uterus wall. This might lead to vaginal bleeding in late pregnancy, premature birth, foetal distress and even death.
Carbon monoxide is another harmful element found in a cigarette. Mothers who smoke have more carbon monoxide and less oxygen in the body. But babies require a good supply of oxygen to grow. Thus, in order to compensate for the short supply of oxygen, some foetuses try to produce extra red blood cells to carry more oxygen.
In rare cases, the blood tends to get too thick from the increasing amount of red blood cells. Thick blood has the tendency of forming unwanted blood clots that can block blood supply to the vital organs. When vital organs are deprived of blood supply, the consequences can be critical and even fatal.
There are many other possible complications, such as premature rupture of the membranes, congenital heart diseases, asthma and allergies.
For women who have been smoking before they were pregnant, if they are able to quit smoking by 16 weeks of gestation, many of the complications mentioned above could be minimised or even altogether avoided .
Most of us are aware that as long as a pregnant woman remains smoke-free, the mother and foetus will be well. However, a non-smoking expectant mother is not exactly smoke-free. We need to take into account the surrounding environment that the woman lives in.
Passive smoking, also known as second-hand smoke, puts a foetus at risk as much as first-hand smoke does. It increases the risk of genetic mutation to the babies when there is exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy, especially during the foetal development stage.
Second-hand smoke exposure is just as damaging as active smoking and leads to lifelong repercussions mentioned earlier in this article, such as affecting survival, birth weight, and susceptibility to diseases. If a woman is trying to build a family, the best option is to quit smoking. Or if the woman is already pregnant, ensure people around her quit smoking for the sake of the unborn child.
Breaking the urge to smoke is not easy due to nicotine dependence. Within seconds of the first inhalation of a cigarette, nicotine arrives at the brain’s reward pathways, where it triggers the release of dopamine, resulting in an immediate reward sensation.
Nicotine binds to nicotinic receptors in the brain, augmenting the release of neurotransmitters, including dopamine.
Consequently, habitual use of nicotine from smoking causes dependency and can cause an increase in tolerance. Because nicotine is so addictive, smokers, especially those who consume more than one pack per day, have a difficult time quitting.
There are smoking cessation aids available in the market such as nicotine replacement therapy and non-nicotine oral tables. It is advisable to speak to a doctor or pharmacist about the best treatment options available, especially for expectant or breastfeeding mothers, as nicotine replacement therapy might be toxic and harmful to the foetus.
Encourage your spouse or family members to kick the habit as second-hand smoke plays a big role too.
Smokers need considerable support to quit successfully. It has been proven that a smoking cessation therapy combined with a support programme greatly increases the smoker’s chance of quitting successfully and staying off cigarettes thereafter. The support network can also include the smoker’s family members and friends.
> This article was contributed by Dr Raman Subramaniam in collaboration with Pfizer Malaysia’s ‘Life without Cigarettes’ educational column on smoking cessation.

Sexual deviation by Dr Milton Lum
Sexual deviation
The Doctor Says
SEXUAL desires and behaviours are considered unusual or abnormal, i.e. beyond the normal range, when sexual gratification is achieved from experiences that are dependent on particular sexual objects. This kind of behaviour occurs for a major period of time, interferes with the sexual relations or daily functioning of those affected and may cause distress to them. Although they recognise the negative impact on their lives, they are not able to control them.
The definition of normality depends on culture and the times. It may be problematic as it involves making value judgments and even categorising others.
This is influenced, to a large extent, by sexual stereotyping. For example, when a woman pets a child, she is nurturing; when a man pets a child, it can be construed as molesting.
“Sexual preference disorders” is preferred to the term previously used, “sexual deviation”, as it clarifies the essential nature of this group of behaviours, i.e. arousal in response to an inappropriate stimulus. These disorders are more common in men than women. There is no local published data available on the prevalence of these disorders, but this does not mean that they do not exist or the prevalence is low.
There are various types of sexual preference disorders listed in the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD).
Fetishism
Fetishism is the reliance on some non-living object as a stimulus for sexual arousal sexual gratification. Many fetishes are extensions of the human body, such as articles of clothing or footwear. Other common examples are characterised by particular textures such as rubber, plastic or leather. This disorder is more common in males than females.
Fetishistic transvestism is the wearing of clothes of the opposite sex principally to obtain sexual excitement and to create the appearance of a person of the opposite sex. This disorder is distinguished from transsexual transvestism by its clear association with sexual arousal and the strong desire to remove the clothing once orgasm occurs and sexual arousal declines. It can occur as an earlier phase in the development of transsexualism. This disorder is usually unheard of in females.
Exhibitionism
Exhibitionism is the tendency to expose the genitalia to strangers (usually of the opposite sex) in public places, without inviting or intending closer contact. There is usually, but not invariably, sexual excitement at the time of exposure and the act is commonly followed by masturbation. In general, childhood trauma, e.g. sexual abuse or significant childhood experiences, can manifest itself in exhibitionism. Male genital exhibitionism is an indicator of future sexual offences in some individuals.
Voyeurism
Voyeurism is the tendency to look at people engaging in sexual or intimate behaviour such as undressing without their knowledge, followed by sexual excitement and masturbation. The differentiation of innocent enjoyment of nudity from voyeurism can be difficult.
Paedophilia
Paedophilia is the sexual preference for children, boys or girls or both, usually of prepubertal or early pubertal age. Most paedophiles are heterosexual men and are often married with children. The paedophile is known to the molested children in about 90% of cases. There are reports that more than 15% of paedophiles are relatives of the molested children.
Sadomasochism is the preference for sexual activity which involves the infliction of pain or humiliation, or bondage. If the subject prefers to be the recipient of such stimulation this is called masochism; if the provider, sadism. Often an individual obtains sexual excitement from both sadistic and masochistic activities. The conditions may coexist in the same individual, sometimes in association with other sexual preference disorders.
Combinations
Multiple disorders of sexual preference refer to the situation where more than one abnormal sexual preference occurs in one person and there is none of first rank. The most common combination is fetishism, transvestism and sadomasochism.
Other disorders of sexual preference include a variety of other patterns of sexual preference and activity, including making obscene telephone calls, rubbing up against people for sexual stimulation in crowded public places (frotteurism), sexual activity with animals (bestiality), and use of strangulation or anoxia for intensifying sexual excitement.
There is significant distress to the individual or disruption of his or her daily functioning in most of the sexual preference disorders. Some of the disorders listed above are considered crimes in most cultures and legal systems, and some are easier to detect than others.
Management
Persons with sexual preference disorders avail themselves of medical attention in different ways. Some sex offenders are referred by the police or courts for treatment to address their behaviour. Some distressed patients seek help due to embarrassment, concerns about their health and fear of the law. Some, who are in stable relationships, seek help because their partners are distressed. Some seek help because they have sexual dysfunction, e.g. a man who has erectile dysfunction unless he has contact with article(s) of clothing or footwear.
The assessment of patients with sexual preference disorders is usually multi-disciplinary, especially when there is criminal behaviour. Apart from a general medical assessment, there is psychiatric and psychosexual assessment, behavioural and social interaction analysis, and risk assessment for future offences. The attitude towards the offence and victim is also analysed.
Based on the assessment findings, a treatment plan is recommended with the treatment goal agreed to by the patient and therapist. Success may be limited if the treatment goal is just to eliminate the disorder. Control is achievable but it has to be supplemented with gains in other more acceptable sexual behaviours. This means that a treatment plan that includes an attempt to get rid of the disorder would also include an attempt to address other sexual anxieties or skill deficits. The treatment methods used include incorporation, group therapy, orgasmic reconditioning, electrical aversion and drugs.
Conclusion
Sexual preference disorders are nothing new as they have been recorded since more than two millennia ago. They present problematic challenges to healthcare providers and society, especially if there is criminal behaviour. After careful and detailed assessment, treatment goals have to be established together with a comprehensive treatment plan for the affected individual.**Read more : The Star

HIV Symptoms
HIV Symptoms
HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, is a sexually transmitted disease that assails the immune system. The virus attacks your CD4 cells (or T4 cells), which are necessary to fight off illnesses. Eventually, the virus overwhelms the CD4 cells and your body becomes unable to fight off diseases and infections. Once your body's CD4 cell count falls below 200 per cubic millimeter of blood, and/or an opportunistic infection takes hold of your weakened immune system, you will be diagnosed with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Symptoms of HIV vary according to what stage of the infection you are in.
Early Symptoms of HIV
The earliest symptoms of HIV infection occur while your body begins to form antibodies to the virus (known as seroconversion) between six weeks and three months after infection with the HIV virus. Those who do show early HIV symptoms will develop flu-like symptoms. This can include: fever, rash, muscles aches and swollen lymph nodes and glands. However, for most people, the first symptoms of HIV will not be apparent.
Although the infection is slowly taking hold of your body, the majority of those infected with HIV will be asymptomatic. Only by being tested for HIV can you know for sure if you have been infected. Yet, despite the absence of HIV symptoms, you are still highly contagious during this time making it very much a possibility to infect others, including your baby.
HIV/AIDS Symptoms
As the infection progresses, people with HIV grow increasingly susceptible to illnesses and infection that don't normally affect the healthy population. Even though many of these illnesses can easily be treated, those with HIV often have such weakened immune systems that typical cures fail.
Without treatment, people infected with HIV can expect to develop AIDS eight to ten years after HIV infection. Taking HIV medications, however, can slow down this progression. With treatment, it can take ten to 15 years or more before you develop AIDS. In the later stages of HIV, before it progresses to full blown AIDS, signs of HIV infection can involve more severe symptoms. These include:
* chronic yeast infections or thrush (yeast infection of the mouth)
* Fever and/or night sweats
* Easy bruising
* Bouts of extreme exhaustion
* Unexplained body rashes
* Appearance of purplish lesions on the skin or inside mouth
* Sudden unexplained weight loss
* Chronic diarrhea lasting for a month or more
Symptoms of AIDS
To be diagnosed with AIDS, your T4 cell count must drop to below 200 per cubic millimeter (in healthy adults, a T4 cell count of 1,000 or more per millimeter is normal) or be infected with an opportunistic infection. Opportunistic infections are so named because they take advantage of your weakened immune system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains a list of those illnesses that are deemed to be opportunistic infections and lead to an AIDS diagnosis. This list includes, but is not limited to:
* Kaposi's Sarcoma
* Pulmonary tuberculosis
* Candidiasis of the esophagus, trachea, bronchi or lungs
* Toxoplasmosis of the brain
* Severe bacterial infections
* Invasive cervical cancer
* Lymphoma
* Recurrent pneumonia
Additionally, vision loss, nerve damage and brain impairment can also occur. Signs of brain deterioration include troubles thinking, loss of co-ordination and balance and behavioral changes.
While there are treatments to help prolong the life of those infected with the AIDS virus, there is currently no AIDS cure. The best way to protect yourself is by taking preventative measures.

Don't forget, this is a translation of the original video

The two talking cats
Stina and Mossy (the two cats seen in this video) usually fight instead of talk, so this was an odd moment. They kept "talking" for about 1 hour, constantly. We've had alot of laughs over this clip.. =)
- Update -
Alot of questions have been asked concerning their relation to each other, gender and so on. They are not related in any way, both are females, approximately 10 years of age when these pictures were taken. Mossy is the one to the left, which makes Stina the one on the right side =) They are both still healthy and vigorous.

Mola mola hunting in Bali
Mola mola hunting in Bali
By MICHAEL D’OLIVEIRO
There are few places on earth where you can find the strange-looking Mola mola, and exotic Bali is one of them.
Bali. The name conjures up visions of beautiful, golden beaches like Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, not to mention great bargains in art and craft items in laid-back Ubud.
Scuba divers, though, can think only of the Mola mola when in Bali.
The Mola mola, also known as the sunfish, is one of the ocean’s rare and amazing oddities. With its large oval body and ridiculously flimsy-looking flippers, the Mola mola looks like a science fiction-inspired cartoon creation.
Scuba divers allowing a Mola mola or sunfish to pass in Crystal Bay, Bali. — BLUE SEASON BALI
Its eyes are as a big as soup bowls and, even better, this fish loves divers.
Bali is only one of two spots in the world where the Mola mola can be seen. The trouble is, these critters have a fussy time-schedule for appearing in shallow water. Also, they prefer certain temperatures — the colder the better!
The sunfish’s favourite rendezvous spot is off the small island of Nusa Penida, southeast of Bali.
From my villa in Seminyak, we took just 20 minutes to reach Sanur, where the dive operator Blue Season Bali is located. Here, the divers congregated, the usual paperwork was done, and then we were off on a short ride to the beach to the waiting boat.... (read more about 'Mola mola hunting in Bali')

Eat more of a variety of vegetables and fruits, cereals and pulses such as beans to help prvent cancer.
THE choices we make about what we eat, drink and how active we are each day will together provide us important protection against cancer at all times of life, from childhood to old age.
I have been writing on the prevention of cancer in this column. I have been relying on the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) expert report on Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer, released in November 2007 to convey to readers the important message of the prevention of cancers.
Watermelons are a good source of beta carotene.
This week, we look at the fourth WCRF recommendation: eat mostly foods of plant origin.
What is the link to cancer?
The WCRF Expert Panel identified several reasons why these plant foods may protect against cancer.
·They contain various vitamins and minerals which help keep the body healthy and strengthen our immune system
·They are also good sources of substances like phytochemicals. These are biological active compounds, which can help to protect cells in the body from damage that can lead to cancer.
·Plant foods contain dietary fibre. Foods containing fibre are also linked to a reduced risk of cancer. Fibre is thought to have many benefits, including helping to speed up “gut transit time” , i.e. how long it takes food to move through the digestive system.
·Plant foods can also help us to maintain healthy weight because many of them are less energy dense.
WCRF recommendations
The recommendation of WCRF is therefore: eat mostly foods of plant origin.
The public health goals, which are for populations and are therefore principally for health professionals are:
·Population average consumption of non-starchy vegetables and of fruits to be at least 600 g daily
·Relatively unprocessed cereals (grains) and/or pulses (legumes), and other foods that are a natural source of dietary fibre, to contribute to a population average of at least 25 g non-starch polysaccharide daily
The personal recommendations, meant for people, as communities, families, and individuals are:
·Eat at least five portions/servings (at least 400 g) of a variety of non-starchy vegetables and of fruits every day
·Eat relatively unprocessed cereals (grains) and/or pulses (legumes) with every meal
·Limit refined starchy foods
·People who consume starchy roots or tubers as staples are also to ensure intake of sufficient non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and pulses (legumes)
These goals and recommendations are broadly similar to those that have been issued by other international and national authoritative organisations. These recommendations are not just for reducing risk to cancers, but for a variety of diet-related chronic diseases.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables supply a variety of nutrients. Some are especially abundant in vitamin A and C, and most contain dietary fibre. Some good sources of beta-carotene, which are precursors of vitamin A, are dark green leafy vegetables such as sawi, spinach, cekor manis, kangkong and kai-lan; fruit and root vegetables such as tomatoes, bell peppers, sweet potato and carrots. Fruits like mango, papaya and watermelon are also rich sources.
Some rich sources of vitamin C are guava, cashew apple, papaya, mango, starfruit and oranges.
Many green vegetables also contain folate. Other sources of folate are peas, okra and sweet corn. Oranges, orange juice, pineapple juice and plantain also contain folate.
Fruits and vegetables are placed at level two of the Malaysian Food Guide Pyramid. The MDG recommends “eating more” fruits and vegetables, with at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. A serving of fruit can be a small to medium orange or apple; a medium-sized banana or ½ a medium-sized guava. A serving of vegetable equals ½ cup cooked dark green leafy vegetables with edible stems or ½ cup cooked fruit vegetable (eg tomatoes) or root vegetable (eg carrots)
Cereal grains and legumes
Cereals (grains) are the seeds and energy stores of cultivated grasses. The main types are rice, wheat, maize (corn), oats, barley and sorghum. The major nutrient in cereal is starch; they are therefore an economical source of energy. Cereals are also a fair source of proteins in the diet. The nutritive value of cereal protein can be improved by combining with milk, meat or legumes.
Many of the grains that we consume today are refined. However, during the refining process, e.g. polishing of rice and refining of wheat, important nutrients are removed, particularly dietary fibre, oil, B vitamins and protein. It is therefore strongly recommended to consume more of the unpolished varieties of grains.
Leguminous include peas, beans and lentils. The most popular legume amongst Malaysians is probably soya bean and its products. We have been consuming soya bean in various forms, e.g. as soya milk, tofu, tau-kua, tempeh. taufu-fah,fu-chok and soya bean sprout.
All legumes except for soya beans are very similar in nutritional content. They are rich in protein, carbohydrate and dietary fibre. They are also important sources of some vitamins such as the B-vitamins. With 34% protein content, soya beans is a richer source of plant protein compared to other legumes, whose protein content range from 14 to 24%. Soya beans are available in different forms such as soya milk, tofu, tempeh, textured vegetable protein (TVP), and soya sprouts.
Dietary fibres are healthful
Fibre is the indigestible polysaccharide portion of plants. They can be in the forms of soluble and insoluble fibre. The sources of soluble fibres are fruits, cereals and legumes and insoluble fibres are vegetables and wheat bran.
Fibres found in these foods are now known to be able to bring about a variety of beneficial effects to health. For example, fibres help proper bowel function, reduce symptoms of chronic constipation, diverticular diseases, and hemorrhoids and may lower the risk for heart disease and some forms of cancer.
Dietary fibres are now added to a variety of foods that do not traditionally contain them, e.g. to milk powder and beverages. A variety of non-digestible polysaccharides and oligosaccharides have been recognised as dietary fibre and with approved function claims, e.g. inulin, fructooligosaccharide, galactooligosaccharide, mixture of these oligosaccharides, polydextrose resistant dextrin and resistant starch.
Phytochemicals are bioactive components
Besides vitamins and minerals, plant foods like orange, cabbage and oats contain numerous naturally occurring components that possess physiological and health benefits that go beyond the basic nutrients.
Many of these chemicals in plants (phytochemicals) have been shown to be capable of reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart diseases.
Fruits and vegetables contain a good amount of these bioactive components. Carotenoids are good examples of these phytochemicals and some common carotenoids with known physiological functions are beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein. These are found in the orange-red pigments of fruits and vegetables.
Other healthful phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables are glucosinolates, found in vegetables of the Brassicafa family, which include cabbage, cauliflower, kai-lan, Chinese cabbage, pak-choy and Brussel sprouts.
Some bioactive components identified in the soya bean and their potential health benefits investigated are isoflavones, phytosterols and saponins.
Yes, I know you have heard about the goodness of plant foods before. You have heard about the vitamins and minerals and dietary fibre in these foods. However, I do not think we are not consuming enough of plant foods. I feel we have to do better.

Strategies to help you quit smoking successfully.

Just quit smoking
Strategies to help you quit smoking successfully.
TOBACCO epidemic death toll:
·100 million dead in the 20th century
·By 2030, there will be more than eight million deaths every year
·By 2030, more than 80% of tobacco deaths will be in developing countries
·One billion estimated deaths during the 21st century – WHO report on the global Tobacco epidemic, 2008
Tobacco use is a major cause of premature and preventable death in the world. It is currently responsible for the deaths of about 10,000 Malaysians each year and more than five million worldwide. If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause more than eight million deaths annually by 2030. It has been shown that up to 50% of long-term smokers will die of a smoking-related disease.
According to the World Health Organization, 95% of smokers who attempted to quit without assistance did not make it. – Reuters
Cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products rapidly deliver nicotine to the brain immediately after smokers inhale. But because the effects of smoked tobacco last only a few minutes, smokers experience withdrawal symptoms unless they continue to smoke.
Although standard cigarettes are the most commonly used type of smoked tobacco, other smoked tobacco products, such as bidis, kreteks and shisha, are gaining popularity – often in the mistaken belief that they are less hazardous to health. However, all forms of tobacco are lethal.
Smoked tobacco in any form causes up to 90% of all lung cancers and is a significant risk factor for strokes and fatal heart attacks.
The feel-good effect of nicotine reinforces the sustained need for tobacco, thus creating nicotine dependence. Because nicotine is so addictive, quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do.
According to Assoc Prof Mohamad Haniki Nik Mohamed, Head for Department of Pharmacy Practice, smokers not only need to deal with physiological changes but also psychological and physical dependence to be successful at quitting and staying quit.
When you stop smoking, the absence of nicotine in your system will cause withdrawal symptoms. Among the symptoms you may experience are restlessness, fatigue, dizziness and irritability. Heavy perspiration, diarrhoea or constipation, and headache are common symptoms as well.
Learning to deal with withdrawal symptoms is an important part of the quitting process.
Assoc Prof Haniki highlighted the fact that many smokers want to quit, but are unaware that professional assistance is available to overcome nicotine dependence.
Most smokers attempting to quit today still make unaided quit attempts, or what is commonly known as “cold turkey”. According to the World Health Organization, 95% of smokers who attempted to quit without assistance did not make it. Most smokers take five to seven attempts, without assistance, before succeeding.
There is growing evidence that smokers who receive clinician’s advice and assistance with quitting smoking reported greater satisfaction with their healthcare than those who do not. A series of new data presented at the 2008 annual congress of the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (SRNT) reinforces the need for healthcare professionals to proactively support smoking cessation.
Assoc Prof Haniki said: “There are numerous effective medications available for nicotine dependence, and clinicians (physicians, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, etc) should encourage their use by all smokers attempting to quit.”
Medications approved as first-line for smoking cessation treatment which reliably increase long-term smoking abstinence are divided into two groups, non-nicotine and nicotine based.
The two current non-nicotine based medications are bupropion SR (sustained release) and varenicline, the latest drug launched in the local market recently. The nicotine based products include: nicotine gum, nicotine inhaler, nicotine lozenge and nicotine patch.
“Some smokers would require a combination of the above medications, but this should be done with the assistance and supervision of a healthcare professional,” added Assoc Prof Haniki. “In Malaysia, all of the mentioned medications for smoking cessation are available through the pharmacist without prescriptions, except for bupropion SR and varenicline, which are prescription items. Smokers need to discuss with their pharmacists or doctors to determine the right course of therapy.”
Both counselling and medication are effective when used independently for treating nicotine dependence. However, the combination of counselling and medication is even more effective than either alone.
Based on Assoc Prof Haniki’s experiences in smoking cessation, a support programme is also crucial to the success in quitting smoking. Do remember to get the support of a close friend, co-worker and family members.
Some may find cessation programmes using the telephone (help or quitline) as well as the internet to be supportive and useful. When in need, reach out to a pharmacist or doctor for a helping hand or tips on coping skills.
As the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail”.
Assoc Prof Haniki advises smokers who want to quit to have a quit plan, which can help a smoker significantly achieve smoking cessation. You should plan on the quitting strategy, i.e., cutting down (gradual reduction) or cold turkey (giving up totally and abruptly), methods to overcome withdrawal symptoms, especially craving and how to stay tobacco-free. Knowing the important benefits of quitting, a list of situations in which you smoke and the reasons for smoking, for example, should help you identify what are your “triggers” to lighting up – and finally, a list of healthy alternatives to replace smoking.
Assoc Prof Haniki further elaborates that in order to get the quitting plan moving, smokers should choose a quit date that is the nearest (eg within two weeks or so) and most suitable (eg birthdays, anniversary, etc) because simply reducing without absolute cessation does not work.
A quit date is the beginning of becoming smoke free, and towards a new, healthier life. During the initial week, you may experience more intense withdrawal symptoms. The use of appropriate medication as suggested by your pharmacist or doctor should help you reduce these symptoms significantly.
In addition, remember DEAD, an acronym for “Delay, Escape, Avoid and Distract”. Apply one or more each time you feel like having a cigarette. Also remember that the intensity of the withdrawal symptoms gradually decrease with time. So, stick to the plan and avoid “slips” as much as possible to ensure a successful attempt as well as preventing relapse.
Other tips to quitting successfully, provided by Assoc Prof Haniki, include drinking a lot of water (six to eight oz. glasses are ideal) to flush tobacco-related toxins from your body and facilitate expulsion of phlegm.
Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and limit your fat intake. This would also be useful in preventing the weight gain after quitting, as often experienced by smokers.
Another tip to prevent weight gain associated with cessation is to include more physical activities in your daily routine, and exercise is also a great way to improve your stamina and health.

Summary :
When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) reluctantly moved to the perpetually overcast town of Forks, WA, and set out to carve a niche for herself, she assumed it would be one similar to the low-profile social position she held back in Phoenix. First on the list of surprises was the unfamiliar attention from the male population of her new high school; second, the attention from one male in particular: Edward Cullen, Vampire (Robert Pattinson). Before long, the unlikely soul mates find themselves in a passionate relationship with a variety of significant setbacks, including Edward's special-needs diet (he doesn't eat humans, but Bella's scent inspires a nearly impossible to harness bloodlust) and the human girl's mortality. Though things proceed relatively smoothly at first (Edward even introduces Bella to his adoptive vampire family), a visiting vampire clan consisting of James (Cam Gigandet), Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), and Laurent (Edi Gathegi) catches Bella's unique scent and threatens the young couple's budding, if dangerous, happiness. James, known for his powerful tracking ability, becomes obsessed with making Bella his next victim. Fearing for Bella's safety and that of her loved ones, the Cullens must combine their collective talents in order to stop the highly predatory James before his goal is accomplished. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

World AIDS Day marks 20th anniversary of solidarity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 19 NOVEMBER 2008 For Eric Sawyer, the late 1980s was a “war time situation”. “People with AIDS were fighting for their lives and for their friends”, says Sawyer, an AIDS activist and co-founder of ACT UP New York.
By 1988, seven years after the first case of AIDS was reported, AIDS was causing more deaths in the US then there were in the Vietnam War, and between 5 and 10 million people were estimated to be infected with HIV around the world. Yet governments, media and society in general were not giving AIDS adequate attention. So, “people with AIDS had to literally take to the streets and block traffic and take over government buildings”, Sawyer recalls.
Sawyer had been on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic since developing his first HIV-related symptoms in 1981, before AIDS was officially identified. For him and for thousands of other activists around the world, the formation of World AIDS Day in 1988 was one of the few moments in the year where the growing tragedy of AIDS would finally get attention around the globe.
Now at its 20th anniversary, World AIDS Day continues to be the focus of global solidarity for a pandemic that has led to over 25 million deaths with an estimated 33 million people currently living with HIV worldwide.
World AIDS Day was reportedly the brainchild of the late Jonathan Mann, at the time the director of the Global Programme on AIDS (GPA) at the World Health Organization. After positive reactions to the idea of World AIDS Day by over 100 health ministers at the January 1988 London gathering focused on AIDS and at the 1988 International AIDS Conference in Stockholm, the World Health Organization declared 1 December 1988 as the first World AIDS Day, which was recognised and supported by the UN General Assembly in October 1988.
“We wanted to provide a platform so that people who were working on the issue at any level could get involved”, says Tom Netter, who worked with Mann as the head of the GPA’s public information office. Fostering a sense of solidarity was paramount, says Netter, “so that people could do things at the grassroots level and feel part of the global response at that time.”
Netter recalls that in 1988, despite the short planning time, an event was held in every member state. “That was eye opening”, he said, “It showed that people wanted to have something that they could grab on to, to feel part of the overall response.” In the World Health Organization itself, panels from the AIDS quilt were displayed. “People found that very moving . . . it showed the individuals affected.”
Within three years, the activities around the day “became something that was going to happen spontaneously…People on the ground took off with it”, says Netter.***read more <---click here
